In any foreign country you see vehicles of unfamiliar shapes and sizes, and occasionally silly names. The 2005-2006 R1 was often criticized for having a powerband biased too heavily toward the top-end; the bike was a rocketship when the rider kept the needle in the upper quarter of the tachometer, but in the lower RPM range, it was out-powered by rivals like the suzuki GSX-R1000 and kawasaki ZX-10R. This "600-like" powerband was great on the racetrack, but in everyday street riding, the (relative) lack of low-end grunt and mid-range pull was disappointing.

As I discussed in Part One, the R1 design team was tasked with the seemingly contradictory goals of eliminating or mitigating these shortcomings, while at the same time significantly reducing the new bike's emissions. To accomplish this, they decided to give up yamaha's traditional five-valve cylinder head design in favor of a more conventional four-valve layout, which allowed for a smaller combustion chamber and thus a higher compression ratio (now 12.7:1). The four throttle bodies feeding air to the new cylinder head are topped with an innovative system, called 'YCC-I', which varies the length of the intake runners depending on RPM and throttle position. Below 10,400rpm, the intake runners are 140mm in length, which significantly boosts low-end and mid-range power output. When the R1 spins past 10,400rpm (assuming the rider is applying at least 57.5% throttle), the upper section of the intake runners is lifted away, leaving the air to enter through the 65mm lower sections - a length optimized for high-rpm power output.

The throttle bodies also feature the same 'YCC-T' (yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) throttle by wire system that first debuted on the 2006 R6. Although the throttle is still connected to two cables which run down to the throttle bodies, these cables do not directly actuate the throttle body butterflies. Instead, the rider's wrist motion is translated by a throttle position sensor, which tells the ECU how hard he wants to accelerate. The ECU then makes the decision as to how far and how quickly to open the butterflies, maintaining maximum air velocity in the intake tract to maintain maximum acceleration (consistent with the demands of the rider, that is). Why not locate the throttle position sensor directly on the twist throttle and eliminate the cables, you ask? Well, besides actuating the throttle position sensor, the return cable actuates a small arm that manually closes the throttle body butterflies. Thus, in the unlikely event of an electronic malfunction that left the butterflies open (the throttle-by-wire equivalent of a stuck throttle), the rider can manually close the butterflies by merely closing the throttle.

If our engineering award were based solely on high-tech componentry, the R6 would be the winner hands down. While the 600 supersport class is intended as much for the racetrack as the street, the techno level of the R6 is still amazing. An engine that pumps out over 130 bhp with ram air induction and a 17,500 rpm redline, a fl y-by-wire electronic throttle system, titanium valves, an adjustable back-torque limiting (slipper) clutch, EXUP exhaust power valve and twin-injector electronic fuel injection. Whew! First ride evaluations report the performance of the new R6 to be staggering.

yamaha Gladiator, the latest 125 cc bike from yamaha Motor India, is out in the market. yamaha unveiled the 5-speed 'fun bike' in New Delhi on Wednesday. The yamaha Gladiator will be up against the leaders in the 125 cc executive segment dominated by hero honda Super Splendor and the Bajaj DTSi.
The yamaha Gladiator DX will have electric start and 240 mm front disc brakes, while the standard yamaha Gladiator will come with drum brakes and kickstart.

The 11 PS, four stroke bike is the first in a line of three bikes which yamaha India plans to launch this year.

Said yamaha Motor India CEO and managing director Tomotaka Ishikawa: �True to yamaha�s belief of setting new benchmarks by offering products that surpass customer expectations, the Gladiator will kick start a new biking lifestyle in the Indian market. Developed as a next generation fun bike, Gladiator brings with it the added values of superb performance, new styling, greater handling and comfort� .

Its 125 cc single cylinder churns out a maximum power output of 8.0kW (11 PS) at 7,500 rpm and a max torque of 10.4 Nm (1.06 kgf-m) at 6,500 rpm, a notch above most bikes in the category. Moreover, the bike can be started in any gear and offer excellent corner handling. yamaha claimed that the Gladiator bike will be able to give a mileage of 67 kmpl in actual city conditions.

The yamaha Gladiator power unit is characterized by its 5 speed transmission, a first for any executive category bike, with optimized gear ratios. The smooth transition of gears makes it possible to bring out optimum torque throughout the torque-band. yamaha claims that the Gladiator is equally at ease in stop and start conditions of urban traffic and the open highways. yamaha has also started a new campaign to promote the yamaha Gladiator in India.

At the launch of yamaha Gladiator in India, company officials also announced said that yamaha plans to sell 4 lakh bikes in India this year and six lakhs next. yamaha will also be setting up a new plant to manufacture two wheelers in India between 2008 and 2010. yamaha also has plans to foray into the scooter segment, for which a feasibility survey is under way.

yamaha, which was one of the pathbreakers in the 100cc category back in the eighties and early nineties has been steadily losing marketshare in the last few years. Now, it commands a small 4% of the two-wheeler market, which it hopes to raise to 10%.

Whether the benefits of YCC-S are worth the extra money is a tough call. For me, I'd save the money and get the standard transmission. Early-adopters and less-involved riders will appreciate the trick new system that is bound to only get better over time. Perhaps one day we'll see a YZF-R1 with the FJR's toggle shifter but without the auto-clutch.

Yamaha says the AE was made "to expand the appeal by offering more relaxed function," and its mission is mostly accomplished. The company claims that nearly 30% of its orders during its "Priority Delivery" program were for the AE, although Yamaha has made an extra production run of the standard model to fulfill demand.

In 2005, an upsurge in FJR sales resulted in the bike achieving a solid 28% market share in the category. With the considerable upgrades to the 2006 model and the special AE version, we expect that number to rise.

Styling

The new Grand Vitara is far sleeker than the previous one, with crisp lines that recall the latest from Land Rover. Nothing eye-catching, just thoroughly tasteful. Nicely integrated fender flares are the only sign of the rugged structure that lies beneath the pretty sheetmetal.

The sleek lines conceal just how much the Grand Vitara has grown. Wheelbase is up by half a foot and overall length by nearly a full foot. As a result, it's now about the same size as a Ford Escape or Jeep Liberty, and significantly larger than a Hyundai Tucson. The Honda and GM compact SUVs are larger still, but not by nearly as large a margin as before.

Inside the new Grand Vitara looks far more upscale than the old one, although cloth trim could stand to look less pedestrian. The instrument panel is styled much like those in the Acura TL and Subaru Legacy, with satin-finished trim running down each side of the center stack and then around the shifter. The switchgear also resembles that in the most recent $30,000 Japanese cars. The main thing that gives away this SUV's $20,000 price is the lightweight feel to the doors common to Asian cars in this price range.

Accommodations

The view from the comfortably contoured driver's seat is much like that in other compact SUVs. Meaning only the shortest drivers will feel any need to use the manual height adjuster. You're clearly sitting much higher off the road than in a car. But getting in and out isn't difficult, even without running boards.

The rear seat is mounted even higher than the front seats. As a result, as in a Ford Escape thigh support is better than you'll find in 90 percent of the sedans on the road today. The increase in wheelbase went entirely into the rear passenger compartment; compared to the previous Grand Vitara rear legroom has grown by over half a foot, to 37.2 inches. A Honda CR-V or Chevrolet Equinox offers even more rear legroom, but 37 inches is plenty for all but the largest adults. Especially given the high cushion. Shoulder room is also in midsize sedan territory, so a third adult will fit but won't likely be comfortable.

The rear seat reclines and includes a center armrest. As in most SUVs, the cushion is a bit on the flat side, but overall comfort seemed good. Assuming the headrests are raised. As in many SUVs these days, the headrests dig into the shoulder blades when fully lowered. This enables the seat to be folded without removing them.

Cargo volume is 24 cubic feet with the rear seat up, and 69 with it folded. Both numbers are around the compact SUV average, and enough for all but the largest items. Last year's Grand Vitara topped out at a much less useful 50 cubic feet. As in the 2005, the spare tire is mounted on the side-opening tailgate, so it does not rob interior space.

We tested the 5-door Estate 2.0 litre 16v Petrol Automatic version to see how it would fare within the ever growing 4x4 market. The first thing we noticed was its impressive size and streamlined styling including integral roof rails, contrasting colour plastic side mouldings and subtly tinted windows. It has excellent ground clearance and combined with its substantial tyres and attractive alloy wheels you have an off-road vehicle with real road presence.

Swift turnabout for a little sport

There's been a small lather of excitement about the coming of the Swift Sport, a car that has those beyond a certain age reminiscing about the Swift GTi.

Call it a pocket rocket or hot hatch, but the basic fact was the little Suzuki delivered a distinct combination of performance and pricing when it landed here in 1989.

Time moves on, and by the time the GTi departed these shores in 2000 it had been consigned to also-ran status. The entire Suzuki passenger-car line-up wasn't engaging much interest, owing to the unimpressive Ignis and Liana.

However, the Swift mini has done much to right things for Suzuki since its launch in early 2005. It is a credible mini-car, technically impressive, with a funky five-door body, and is good value.

So rolling out a version with higher performance standards makes sense, particularly when you have history in the hot-hatch segment.

Pricing is certainly set smartly enough to keep your bank manager from freezing up. At $23,990 the Swift Sport easily undercuts competition such as the Volkswagen Polo GTI ($26,990) and Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart ($29,990).

It backs that up by including front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, air-conditioning, supportive sports seats, power windows and mirrors and an MP3-compatible, single-CD audio.

Some would appreciate an automatic transmission option to supplement the standard five-speed manual. But the biggest miss is the lack of a spare tyre. You have to make do with sealant instead. Fine in Japanese suburbia, but not so good if you are in Australia 300 kilometres from anywhere with a tyre that is beyond repair.

The standard Swift's good looks are embellished by 16-inch alloy wheels, a bodykit that includes a front air dam, side skirts and a rear spoiler, foglights and dual exhaust tips.

Inside, the small steering wheel has leather trim and the cloth is done in red and black. There's some metal-look plastic splashed around the cockpit and drilled stainless-steel pedals, which adds class. But a roof lining made from what could be ersatz cardboard does let the atmosphere down.

Under the bonnet, the Swift's variably valve timed four-cylinder engine capacity grows from the standard 1.5 to 1.6 litres. With that, power lifts from 75 kW to 92 kW and torque from 133 Nm to 148 Nm. Both are delivered 800 rpm higher in the rev range, at 6800 rpm and 4800 rpm respectively.

The result is perky and enthusiastic. The Sport's engine is entirely usable at low revs in town, gets up and going from about 4000 rpm and becomes truly interested between 5000 and the 6800 rpm redline.

There's also a beaut, raspy four-cylinder induction and exhaust noise to accompany acceleration, which adds to the atmosphere.

At 100 km/h, the engine is turning over at 3300 rpm in top gear. That seems a bit extreme, particularly when cruising on the highway. At least it didn't have too much impact on fuel economy. Suzuki claims 7.5 L/100 km, and we managed 8.4 L/100 km. The drawback is that expensive 98 RON premium unleaded petrol is recommended.

Complementing the drivetrain is a front-wheel-drive chassis that has been tuned for a more sporting response. The body has been strengthened, rebound and dampening forces increased by about 60 per cent, and Monroe shock absorbers fitted. The steering and brakes have also been refined.

It's obvious there's been some thought put into making it all meld together. The Sport rides firmly, for sure, but only the roughest surfaces upset its demeanour. Being such a small vehicle, at 3.8 metres, and so light, at 1090 kg, it is delightfully nimble on tight and winding roads.

There's instant and accurate response from the steering, no shortage of grip from the impressive Dunlop tyres and an absence of the excessive bodyroll that often blights small, tall cars. The Sport makes you smile - often without even realising it. That can apply just as easily commuting in town as on a winding country road.

The rear-seat passengers don't get such a good deal; it's understandably tight back there considering the Sport's size, but there's no slide function to help out and storage pockets are notably absent. The rear seat does flip and fold forward, however, comfortably accommodating a mountain bike sans front wheel.

So does the Swift Sport replace the GTi? Not really. It's a mild, rather than wild, makeover that is easy to live with and fun to drive, but certainly no beast.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X is getting closer

Mitsubishi has just made another step to bid the farewell to the current Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX earth-scorcher. First previewed in January as the Prototype X, the upcoming Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X ("X" stands for "Ten" in Roman digits) will be slightly less aggressive and more mainstream than the concept model.
Anyway, according to the recently revealed pictures of the preproduction model, the new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X will retain some of the concept's badassedness. It lacks Prototype X's LED foglights and will feature slightly different grille and front fascia but it still resembles a hungry and angry shark looking for a prey.
According to the company's press release, the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, which will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, will feature new lightweight 2.0-liter turbocharged MIVEC engine with aluminum cylinder block and a 6-speed automated manual transmission.

Test Drive: 2004 Suzuki Swift +

Affordable, small hatchbacks were becoming a rarity after the last generation Suzuki Swift and Chevy Metro/Pontiac Firefly were discontinued in 2000. Hyundai and Kia carried the torch for a few years with the Accent and Rio, then Toyota joined the race with the Echo hatchback. Now Suzuki and Chevrolet are back with the Swift + and Aveo respectively.

While the previous Swift/Metro/Firefly models were manufactured at a joint GM/Suzuki plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, the new Swift/Aveo are built by General Motors Daewoo Auto and Technology (GMDAT) in Bupyong, South Korea. GMDAT was formed in 2002 when General Motors bought a majority stake in bankrupt Daewoo. Suzuki is a minor partner in the company, which explains why they share some of the cars made by GMDAT, such as the Swift + and the Verona.

Essentially, the Swift + is the next generation Daewoo Lanos, if that company had survived long enough to build it. Having driven both cars, I can safely say that the new Swift +/Aveo is a far superior car to the Lanos (which was sold in Canada prior to Daewoo's demise) particularly in the areas of noise and vibration reduction and interior quality.

In Canada, Suzuki offers the Swift + in a four-door hatchback bodystyle only while Chevrolet also offers a four-door sedan version of their Aveo. The Suzuki and GM hatchbacks are almost identical, but there are a couple of differences: the Swift + is not available with anti-lock brakes while the Aveo offers them as an option. The Swift + is about $400 cheaper than the Aveo hatchback, but the Aveo includes standard fog lights. However, the Swift + has a standard CD player whereas the Aveo does not.

Honda’s Accord Euro range receives a facelift for 2006 with a series of subtle improvements – including optional factory-fitted satellite navigation.

Exterior changes include redesigned front and rear bumpers, front grille and new alloy wheels for both the Euro and Euro Luxury.

Interior changes include new panels with improved wood or metallic textures, an automatic day-night mirror (Luxury only) and the addition of a Multi-Information Display trip computer showing distance to empty, elapsed trip time, average speed, instantaneous fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, outside temperature, odometer and two trip meters.

Factory-fitted satellite navigation is optional for the Euro Luxury. The navigation system is DVD-based for faster route calculation and has a colour map, position arrow and voice directions. Unlike many stand-alone systems, the navigation is fully integrated into the vehicle’s dash and is housed with the heating, cooling and audio controls.

The Euro’s superb combination of a 2.4-litre engine and six-speed manual or five speed sequential-shift automatic transmission remains unchanged.

Honda Australia Director Lindsay Smalley said the facelift will boost the appeal of an already popular car.

“We have freshened up the top-selling Euro,” he said. “The car that was judged by Australia’s Best Cars as the Best Mid-Size car over $28,000 is now even better value.”

“The addition of satellite navigation really puts it in a class of its own.”

Prices for the standard vehicles remain unchanged with the satellite navigation costing an additional $3,000. Customers will be able to see the new Euro as it makes its way into Honda dealers throughout December this year.

2005 Suzuki Swift

With one of the most inappropriate names ever for a car-the Swift has always been more sluggish than quick-it's hard to take this subcompact too seriously, especially since Suzuki is little more than a bit player in both Europe and Japan, even in the minicar market. Yet the new Swift, which will be built in Hungary for the European market, looks chiseled on the outside and benefits from a stylish cabin. Available in three- and five-door guise, the Swift can be outfitted with 91-horsepower 1.3-liter and 102-horsepower 1.5-liter gasoline engines or a 70-horsepower 1.3-liter diesel. We somehow doubt it will ever venture across the Atlantic, but if it was priced right it would be a lot more appealing to cheap car buyers, city dwellers, and college kids than a Chevy Aveo. Which, as it turns out, is based on an inferior Suzuki.

Tiny Japanese Suzuki Swift car, which is coming to the United States not later than 2007, has been awarded with the 'Fun car of the year' prize in Japan for its 'unique driving experience and genuine world wide appeal due to its bold styling, dynamic design, and excellent handling capabilities'.
This incarnation of Suzuki Swift was presented to the European customers just a year ago during the last Geneva Motor Show 2005. That time the super-compact Hungarian-built hatchback came in two trims -- three and five-door, and was equipped with a pair of gasoline and a diesel engine, ranging from 70 hp, 125 lb-ft of torque, 1.3-L, diesel I-4 to a much more powerful for such a tiny toy 102 hp, 98 lb-ft of torque, 1.5-L, 16-valve, DOHC I-4.

CR-V is powered by a 16-valve 2.0-liter four cylinder engine that is rated at 126 horsepower. When I first started driving the CR-V I thought it was underpowered, but then I remembered I had just left the Porsche Boxster. After a few days I became used to the Honda's power and felt it was adequate for the vehicle. The engine is connected to the wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission.

At no time do you get the feeling you're driving a truck in the CR-V. Even the smaller American SUVs are still truck-based and are bigger than the CR-V.

The CR-V comes with all the accessories you would want, including a good HVAC system and a sound system with no cassette or CD. Our tester also had the ABS option. In the warm humid weather in which we drove the CR-V, the air conditioner was sometimes taxed to cool down the vehicle.

The CR-V also has good amenities, like an extra power outlet and a lot of cupholders. One of the best goodies was a picnic table that doubles as the cover over the spare tire in the back. It's one of the most practical dual-use features in any automobile.

The Edmund review found a surprising amount of room inside despite the exterior’s diminutive dimensions. Part of this is due to the vehicle's fuel tank placement. Their staffers really liked the reclining rear-seat headrests. As for driving, testers liked the manual shifter, though the automatic version seemed to have more ‘zip’ than its self-shift sibling. Testers also found the Fit to be balanced and stable on the road and track (similar to the Consumer Guide report). Their biggest complaint was the 10.8 gallon fuel tank, though the Fit did average 32 miles per gallon.

The new Honda Stream MPV, which replaces the older homonymous model since July 14 in Japan, has been at last officially announced. The restyled version features much more aggressive and mature appearance and also makes some family resemblance with current Honda Odyssey JDM.
The 1.8-liter engine's maximum power output reaches 140 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. The power is being transferred to the wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.0-liter engine features up to 150 hp and maximum torque of 140 lb-ft and is mated to a CVT transmission with torque converter in FWD configuration, or a five-speed automatic on 4WD vehicles.

With such a wide choice of MPVs now available to the Irish market, buyers can be faced with quite a bewildering choice. Between small, compact and full-size, you really have to look hard at your lifestyle before picking one to suit.

Enter Honda’s medium-sized 2-litre SE Sport Stream, a full 7-seater people-carrier in the compact segment, built for comfort. The 2-litre i-VTEC engine, offering an output of 156bhp, will provide all the power you need.

The 4-door Stream is an attractive looking car, if a little peculiar in shape for some people's taste. That end quarter seems to have a fight going on between the roofline and the end window.

More like a car in height, the Honda Stream offers one of the most comfortable rides in its class. It’s not that the seats, (and there are three rows of them), look a whole lot better than those in other models, it’s that they are so very comfortable. It is a car you could go a long way in.

The Stream is mostly aimed at the needs of a growing family or those with a pretty hectic lifestyle who need to truck around a lot of equipment.

Visibility is great, due to the low scuttle line in the front and all that glass (tinted) which includes a very steeply raked windscreen, three good sized windows and a small A-Pillar window along the sides, as well as a huge rear window. High-mounted brake lights frame the rear window.

It is easy to get in and out of the car and this could be a boon if grandma and grandpa or an elderly aunt are being taken along for the ride, even sitting in the very back seats. An important factor, too, is that the centre headrest is lower so as to allow the driver a good rear view.

The cabin is bright and airy with good quality materials and lots of chrome effect. Added light filters through the electric sunroof which comes with a slide across panel for those who have an allergy to light.

The central stack is square in shape, aluminised and with two big air vents on top. The Panasonic radio is a bit fiddly but the sound is good. Two big temperature knobs are situated on either side of nine big square buttons, all marked clearly with diagrams to tell you what they are. Dials are set in aluminium surround. Orange numbers stand out against the black background.

All MPVs are for the driver nowadays it seems. It is not acceptable to just be big or versatile or even safe; the people carrier must also be fun to drive. Illustrating this point is the launch of several new models this year, all touting a sporty side to go along with the versatility and space, or so the marketing men would have you think. The Corolla Verso, Mazda5 and Mitsubishi Grandis come to mind. The Honda Stream reviewed here has actually been on the market since 2001, purporting to offer the family man the opportunity to have his cake and eat it. The Stream received a minor facelift this year, aimed at making the car even more desirable. We wondered: does it live up to the marketing?

Personally, I don't think much of the Stream's new face. The headlights are too large and the bonnet detailing fussy. In contrast, the rest of the body is cleanly styled, with a large area of glass visually reducing the bulk. The rear lights are neatly integrated with the window and the 5-spoke wheels lend it a sporty edge. In the metal, it struck me that the Stream is much lower than its photographs suggest, not rising much above the average estate car.

This apparent lack of height is not an issue inside the Stream. There is plenty of space for six adults, though it is surprising that Honda didn't use the second row for three seats; instead a useful centre console with integrated cupholders splits the occupants. As with many large MPVs, the addition of a third row of seats drastically reduces the available boot space, though the rear most seats can be folded down to create a flat load area. Interestingly, it is far easier to get into the third row than it is in the Ford Galaxy/VW Sharan as the middle seats tilt and slide out of the way. Elsewhere, the Stream has ample storage space, but it doesn't set any new standards. The best seat in the house is undoubtedly the driver's. Like all modern Hondas, the controls are a joy to use, and well placed. Buttons and switches have a well-engineered tactility to their movement. The driving position is good too, and your sporty side is catered for with leather lining on the steering wheel and gear knob. The dials are clear, and the discerning amongst you won't miss the fact that the speedometer reads to 150mph and the rev counter to 8000rpm.

The only engine available in the Stream at present is a petrol 2.0-litre four-pot, with Honda's excellent i-VTEC variable valve timing system. Most of the time, the engine is quiet and refined. It has an alter ego though: it revs smoothly to the redline, emitting a growl not all that far removed from the roar that the Honda Civic Type-R makes at high revs. Though European buyers may favour the idea of a diesel engine in a car the size of the Stream, the petrol unit is a very competent all-rounder. Be wary of the combined fuel economy figure of nearly 33mpg though as the car will not have been filled to capacity when this measurement was taken. As well as being refined until pushed into sports MPV service, it endows the quite light (1418kg kerb weight) Stream with generous urge. The arbitrary benchmark 0-62mph time is a respectable 9.4 seconds, and the claimed top speed is 127mph. These figures mean little to the driving experience itself. On the motorway, the Stream marches along happily at and over the speed limit, while having enough in reserve for the occasional overtaking manoeuvre on the open road.

Honda has done a good job on the Stream's chassis too. Despite isolating the driver from kickback, the steering has a decent level of feel and is direct and accurate. Understandably, when pushed, the front wheels relinquish grip, but in general the Stream is actually well balanced through a sequence of bends. It certainly belies its size, and the long wheelbase ensures it is utterly stable under all conditions, notably so under heavy braking. You will not be disappointed by the Stream's abilities on your favourite road. Backing up the car's composure is decent feel through the well-spaced pedals and a slick 5-speed manual gearbox, though it must be noted that the brakes do eventually start to fade with heavy use.

The HONDA CITY VTEC !

The new Honda City is probably the most successful model marketed by Honda in the ASEAN region. It is a bold new model, featuring what many Honda fans considers a 'futuristic design' that is based largely on the platform of the highly successful Honda Fit/Jazz. Coming out of Honda R&D Asia in Thailand, it was originally launched in only 1 variant, what has now come to be called the 'City i-DSI' featuring the new L15A 1.5l i-DSI engine. I have reviewed the Honda City i-DSI extensively here on TOVA, it is an excellent vehicle with plenty of 'go' and superb fuel economy - a fine all-rounded vehicle. Early this year, Honda Asia launched a new variant, the Honda City 1.5l VTEC. This new VTEC variant turned the City range into a 2 variants line-up by adding the much eagerly awaited performance-oriented variant, what might be called a City 'sports sedan'. Launched first in Thailand as usual, for Malaysia it was launched back in late-July by Honda Malaysia, a very awaited event by Honda and City enthusiasts. A short while after attending the launching, around early August, I got the invitation to attend the City VTEC's media test-drive session to be held at the hill-top resort of Bukit Tinggi. It was a very interesting session where Honda Malaysia also brought in some engineers from Honda R&D who designed the City VTEC to participate.

Timing-wise, the City VTEC launch and media preview was placed smack into the exciting and hectic period where Honda Malaysia was developing their MME Race Civic. Then there was the excitement of being able to cover the HMRT race from their pits at Sepang, the race report and finally the big scoop on the technical coverage of the MME Civics themselves. As a result, I had no time to cover the City VTEC launch at all. I had a number of readers especially in ASEAN impatiently asking me when I intend to review this new City VTEC. I think some might even have given up waiting for it. To everyone who were waiting, I do extend my sincere apologies. Now that I have time to catch up with my quite considerable backlog, here then is my review of the new Honda City 1.5l VTEC.

Honda City ZX iDSI review

The suspension of the city has always received accolades but as I was told, the city suspension was not very good at handling the bigger potholes. So, Honda has decided to stiffen the suspension wee bit, now the city suspension feels great. The city comes with 175/65 R14 tires mounted on 14x5 1/2JJ steel wheels. Bumps and humps are absorbed with a neat thud, letting you know that you went over it but not letting you feel it. Ride is quite nice even at very low speeds and gets better in the 40 to 60kph range. Corners are handled quite well at low speeds; the suspension is not exactly old city style, so under steer is quite easily provoked at three digit speeds or during hard cornering. The car is very happy cruising at 120kph, but I really missed all round discs, if Honda is listening I wish they make the changes for thesecan go a long way in improving the safety of this car.

The EPS( Electric power steering) is a boon around town, it trasfers none of the effort of turning to the steering wheel, its almost automatic the closest one has been to such effortless steering is on my Sony Playstation! Though it cuts out at higher speeds, its doesnt feel very reassuring as feedback is almost absent. The city continues to have amongst the best rear seats and if you are one to be chauffeured around town, the city is can be an excellent choice thanks to the long travel front seat which is able to liberate a lot of leg room at the rear.

Pricing

The City ZX iDSI models, starting from the base EXi will cost you Rs.684,101, ex-showroom Bangalore. The GXi Rs.730,735, Rs.790,340 for the CVT. The VTEC is dearer still by 20 grand.

Verdict

The Honda city is a car which lives up to its name; it is an excellent urban commuter. Each and every piece of the car has been designed with urban commuting in mind, Honda brand equity is unquestionable. This car can easily outlast you and will not drain UAE of its oil in the process. The city makes for a very sensible 8lakh rupee car; well that was of course untill the Fiesta entered the market. My point is that for all the quality that Honda has on offer, it is collecting a huge amount of money as brand value. I really don't understand how to explain why a Chevrolet Aveo 1.6LT should cost roughly Rs.20000 less when it is offering an engine which atleast on paper offers the same power as a VTec! Well, reasons are many yet they continue to remain subjective. But, the big question is why should you pay so much more? Well, the answer lies in the fact that this a Honda and there isn't much wrong with paying the premium because along with economy that will make an Indica Xeta owner turn green with envy, you also get peace of mind as a freebie.

Introduction

The Honda Odyssey might be the best minivan on the market. It's certainly one of the most enjoyable to drive, and it lives up to Honda's reputation for refinement, convenient features and great fit and finish. Its flexible seating system can accommodate up to eight passengers.

All Odyssey models are powered by a 244-horsepower V6 engine with a five-speed automatic transmission. Four trim levels make it affordable to a wider group of buyers, yet all deliver car-like ride and handling and a comprehensive set of safety features, including electronic stability control and side curtain airbags for head protection.

In its third year of production, the current generation Odyssey still seems fresh. The base LX starts at about $26,000 and includes most of the features that make family travel easier. The line-topping Touring has as many bells and whistles as a good luxury sedan.

Odyssey's range of models has some drawbacks, to be sure. Certain desirable features such as the navigation system or fuel-saving Variable Cylinder Management are included only on the higher-priced models and not available as stand-alone options. With the Odyssey Touring approaching $40,000 out the door, it's out of reach for many buyers.

New for 2007: Honda's Tire Pressure Monitoring System is now standard on all Odyssey models. The system reports a significant drop in tire pressure with a warning indicator in the instruments and identifies the specific tire. Improvements for 2007 include a telescoping steering wheel and a more convenient coin holder. Otherwise, the Odyssey lineup carries over to 2007 unchanged.

All-new subcompact is fun, inexpensive and practical.

Introduction

Subcompact cars are not the penalty boxes they once were. A raft of totally models brings comfort and happy motoring at bargain prices. Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Chevrolet have launched new subcompacts for 2007, while Kia and Hyundai barely beat them to the party with new models for 2006. They come with wacky names like Fit, Yaris, Versa, Aveo, Rio and Accent. For the most part, they're all delightful, get excellent gas mileage, offer comfortable, reliable transportation, and are highly space efficient. There's not a bad one in the bunch.

The Honda Fit distinguishes itself with agile handling, zippy performance, and impressive practicality. A four-door hatchback, the Fit is amazingly comfortable, given its dimensions, even in the back seats. It's a particularly pleasant car for running errands. It's easy to get in and out. It's easy to park. It does indeed fit, just about anywhere.

Perfect for the big city, at home in the suburbs, the Honda Fit offers a smooth ride on bumpy streets and easy manueverability. The five-speed manual is smooth and easy to shift, while the five-speed automatic has paddle shifters, useful when you feel like Rubens Barrichello driving flat out through Eau Rouge. The 1.5-liter engine features Honda's VTEC techonology, giving it a free-revving 109 horsepower, while achieving an EPA-estimated 33/38 mpg City/Highway.

The Honda Fit offers five-passenger seating and comes with a sporty, two-tone fabric interior. The rear seatbacks can be flipped down to create a big, flat cargo hold. Most of the other cars in this class don't offer such a big, flat floor, and that's crucially important when trying to transport a big box. Alternatively, the seat bottoms can be flipped up, creating a nice cargo hold behind the front seats, handy for groceries and errand running or for tall items, like framed art. Fold down all the right-hand seats and you can transport a surfboard. Recline the front seats and they form a couch. Plug in your iPod, lay down and relax.

In short, the new Honda Fit is an exceptionally good package that should please anyone shopping for an inexpensive new car. It retails just below $14,500. Even more compelling is the Sport model, which adds 15-inch alloy wheels, a nice stereo, sporty styling cues, and the all-important keyless remote for less than $1,400. Adding to its sensibility, the Fit comes standard with six airbags and anti-lock brakes. And it looks like fun. The Fit presents a smart ambience, especially a Sport model swathed in Vivid Blue Pearl, Milano Red or Blaze Orange Metallic paint to highlight its massive and colorful headlamp assemblies.

New and improved for 2007.

Introduction

The new, 2007 Honda CR-V is more powerful, more stylish and more comfortable than the previous-generation 2006 models. Its new suspension geometry delivers an improved ride and better, more responsive handling.

Buyers choose from three models, the LX, the EX and the EX-L. The latter comes trimmed in leather and can be fitted with an optional navigation system that incorporates a rearview video camera for safe and easy backing. All have four doors and seat five.

The engine, still an inline four cylinder, employs variable intake valve timing to optimize horsepower and torque for acceleration and cruising speeds. The transmission is a new, five-speed automatic. Real Time all-wheel drive is offered on all three models. The U.S. EPA rates the front-wheel drive CR-V at 23/30 city/highway miles per gallon and the all-wheel drive at 22/28.

Inside, compared with the 2006 CR-V, there's slightly more room in the front seat and slightly less room in the rear seat, except hiproom, which is up by about an inch. There's also marginally more cargo room. Everything by way of instruments, controls and storage is, respectively, logically arrayed, properly placed and reasonably plentiful.

In terms of safety, the new CR-V is fully featured. In addition to the required three-point seatbelts at all five seating positions and front seat airbags, people protection includes front seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear seat side air curtains with roll-over sensors and front seat active head restraints (which work to reduce whiplash in rear impacts). For crash avoidance, antilock brakes, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control are all standard.

As for how the '07 CR-V stacks up against the competition, well, in a number of ways, it could do better. Several, especially its arch rival, the Toyota RAV4, offer seating for seven, more powerful and smoother V6 engines and moderately more-capable systems for driving all four wheels. The Mazda CX-7, which seats five, is more fun to drive and to look at. And the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage carry substantially lower sticker prices.

Thus, buyers looking for peppy performance, snazzy styling and easier financing have better choices. But for Honda loyalists looking for something better than their current CR-V or an SUV to step up into from their Civic, the '07 is the logical way to go.

2007 Nissan Altima Reviews

All-new, powerful and luxurious.

Introduction

Nissan has re-invented the Altima for the second time in its four generations. The Nissan Altima has been totally redesigned for 2007. It offers more performance, comfort, safety, economy, and better looks than last year's model. It looks more like the Maxima now. It's a couple of inches shorter on the outside, but has more room on the inside, including a spacious trunk. Fold-down rear seats allow the trunk to expand into the cabin for carrying big long things.

The object of the redesign was to bring the feel and power of a luxury car to this everyman's midsize sedan, and Nissan has succeeded, at least with the Altima model that has the V6 engine and all the options, including plush leather. There are still models with a four-cylinder engine, which offer good power and get 26 city and 34 highway miles per gallon.

The 3.5-liter V6 is a new engine generation. It makes 270 horsepower, more than what's available in other midsize cars (excluding turbocharged or expensive sports sedans), along with 258 pound-feet of torque. The price for that power: The V6 requires premium fuel and gets 22/28 mpg.

Another thing that makes the Altima stand out is its new optional CVT, or continuously variable transmission. It's the only automatic transmission available in this car, and it's a winner with its manual mode, which allows six speeds or ranges. A CVT improves gas mileage because there's less internal friction.

The handling is true, and the suspension is quite firm without ever being harsh. It inspires confidence. It's a match for rough pavement and is steady and predictable in extreme situations. The Altima also comes loaded with safety features.

An intelligent key comes standard in the Altima. This system enables the car to be started with the keys in your purse or pocket. This might be convenient for some, but it leads to new problems, having to do with the memory of the human brain and confusion of the car's electronic brain.

2007 Honda Element Reviews

Stylish and versatile.

Introduction

The Honda Element was created to be the ultimate in utilitarian chic, and this year it got a little chic-er. The mainstream models that dog lovers and surfers love remain, but the introduction of the chic new Element SC turns this versatile box on wheels into a lowered, carpeted, monochromatic urban cruiser.

As with the other models, the 2007 Honda Element SC can in minutes change roles from a four-seat people mover to a surprisingly big cargo hauler. Likewise, it delivers sedan-style driving dynamics and good fuel economy, at least by SUV standards. However, the SC is not a muddy boot, hose-it-out kind of vehicle, and it's dropped any pretense of all-terrain capability. Clearly, the Element has evolved.

Launched as a 2003 model, the Honda Element was originally aimed at young adventurers who need to haul wet or messy gear within the security of an enclosed cargo area. Its durable, quick-clean interior was a big part of its charm, rather than a strippo-model drawback. Low step-in height made loading mountain bikes or surfboards or big dogs easy, and vinyl flooring made it extra dog-friendly. Dark vinyl fenders and heavy cladding made stone chips or brush scrapes a non-issue. But young surfer boys weren't the only ones attracted to the utility and cuteness of the Honda Element. Other folks saw the benefits of roomy box that got good gas mileage and was easy to park.

The utility benefits mentioned above still apply to the 2007 Element LX, an unadorned base model. And to a considerable extent those benefits still apply to the high-trim EX. Starting with the 2006 models, however, the EX models began rolling out of the factory with painted fenders and cladding, though the bumpers and roof trim remained basic dark vinyl.

Now comes the Element SC, the first model with a fully painted exterior and cloth upholstery. Its suspension is lower and stiffer for improved handling, and it has big 18-inch wheels.

All 2007 models benefit from a major infusion of safety features, including curtain-style head protection airbags for front and rear passengers and Vehicle Stability Assist for improved driver control, making them the benchmark for small utility vehicles. With these upgrades, Honda completes its Safety First marketing initiative, which it claims gives all its vehicles luxury-grade safety features.

A new five-speed automatic transmission for 2007 and a slight increase in horsepower improves throttle response. Despite its utilitarian roots, the Element has always driven more like a car than a truck. Think of a base Honda Civic sedan with softer springs and a higher driving position and you won't be far off. The Element is a fine little automotive appliance. Dressed up as the SC model, it has a little more style.

Drivers
The Peugeot 206 has petrol engines ranging in size from 1.1 to 2.0 litres. The 16-valve variants of the 1.6 and 2.0 litre engines power the sportier XSi and GTi models. The diesel and turbodiesel are some of the best engines in this class and deliver polished and forceful performances. The Peugeot 206 had a lot to live up to in this category and almost manages to match the performance of its predecessor - the 205. It has a well-tuned chassis and more powerful models are very receptive to the driver. The 137bhp GTi has a tendency to wheel-spin, particularly in the wet, but delivers plenty of acceleration when required. The Peugeot's driving performance is a little let down by a long gear change and limited driver feedback through the power steering. However, the biggest issue with the Peugeot 206 is its poor driving position - the steering has no reach adjustment and the driver's seat seems a little high. Parking the 206 is a simple affair although rear visibility is little obstructed by the high window-line.

Passengers
The Peugeot 206 offers good interior space - although larger rivals can make it feel a little small. Wind and tyre noise combined with a raucous air conditioning system do not make for a quiet journey. Out of town smaller engined cars add to this issue, however the diesels deliver a much quieter performance.

Practicality
The 206 provides good storage space in the boot and glove box and LX and GLX models have a large storage compartment under the front passenger seat cushion.

Equipment
Power steering, electric windows, passenger and driver's airbag is standard on all Peugeot 206's with higher specification cars getting CD multi-changers and climate control. Lower specification models have very limited equipment - Style and Look models don't even get split rear seats. The stereo sounds good and has a separate display to deter theft.

Safety & Security
In common with its rivals, the Peugeot 206 scored well in NCAP crash tests and all models now have both drivers and passenger airbags. Side airbags are optional as is ABS.

Quality & Reliability
The Peugeot 206 has a well proven set of mechanicals and comes with a three-year, 60,000 mile warranty, however the interior quality is suspect and as well as being poorly presented.

Owning
Engines are fairly economical and with service intervals set at 20,000 miles, the 206 should be cheap to run. Residual values also hold up well for what is proving to be a very popular supermini.

It goes without saying that the Mondeo is an excellent motorway cruiser but the new model also proves equally adept at weaving around country roads. Responsive steering and tight grip make the experience very enjoyable yet refined. Excellent visibility combines with a multi adjustable seat/steering wheel combination to ensure the driver feels totally in control. The new Duratec petrol engines feel smoother and more sophisticated than their predecessors and also improve fuel economy.

Passengers
The Mondeo provides bags of space for passengers and will seat five people very comfortably. The cabin feels plush and solid and the clever suspension provides a very peaceful ride disturbed only by an unwelcome intrusion of wind noise.

Practicality
The boot is voluminous but the rear seating area is provided with little storage space.

Equipment
Ford has equipped even the basic models with lots of goodies including, ABS, aircon, front and rear electric windows and a CD player.

Safety & Security
Front, rear and side airbags and ABS are included as standard on all models and the Mondeo scored 4 stars in the NCAP test. Ford has fitted deadlocks and remote central locking as standard.

Quality & Reliability
Ford has tried hard to improve the overall quality of the Mondeo and to a great extent have succeeded. The Mondeo now rivals the VW Passat in overall quality and feel. Engine reliability is excellent as is to be expected for a unit built for reliability.

Owning
Ford offers a 3yr warranty on new cars so expect reasonable maintenance and servicing costs. The biggest problem is heavy depreciation. Mondeo's are sold in massive quantities to fleet buyers and newer used models offer good value.

Drivers
The bmw 3 series has a choice of six engines; the 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engines having recently been updated now deliver significant improvements in performance and economy. With a sportier reputation than most of its rivals the 3 Series has a lot to live up to, it doesn't disappoint, BMW has tuned the chassis to make the 3 Series even more responsive and to improve driver feedback. Apart from the 316i, which is underpowered, all of the BMW engines excel; the six cylinder engines are silky smooth and the diesels are awesome, in particular the 330d. On the flipside of the BMW's sportier pedigree is a firmer suspension, resulting in a slightly harder ride than its rivals. The BMW 3 Series has an excellent driving position with two-way adjustable steering and height adjustable seats, which provide good support. The gear change can be a little harsh at low speeds. The steering wheel mounted SMG sequential semi-automatic transmission is also worthy of consideration. As you would expect the cabin is well laid out with controls logically placed and within reach.

Passengers
BMW clearly acknowledged criticisms over passenger space in the previous 3 Series and although not a class leader, the new car easily accommodates four adults with good legroom in the rear. However, a raised central cushion in the rear will make for an uncomfortable journey for a fifth passenger. The new 3 Series has a slightly harder ride than its predecessor. Wind and road noise are very low and engine noise from the diesels is minimal, even at motorway speeds, the six cylinder petrol engines give out a muscular note when pressed.

Practicality
Boot space in the new 3 Series is reasonable if a little inflexible; the rear seats do not fold or split. The glove box is a reasonable size and there are plenty of additional storage spaces in the cabin.

Equipment
In contrast with previous 3 Series even basic models are now reasonably equipped with air conditioning, electric windows, driver, passenger, head and side impact airbags all as standard. The stereo provides a good sound quality and satellite navigation can either be delivered through the stereo display or via a separate LCD panel integrated into the dashboard; the display also doubles up as a TV screen when the car is parked.

Safety & Security
Driver, passenger, head and side-impact airbags with crash sensitive inflation rates are standard on all BMW 3 Series. Also standard are anti-lock brakes traction control and Dynamic Skid Control (DSC).

Quality & Reliability
The BMW 3 Series has a well-earned reputation for durability; hard-wearing engines and the use of high-quality materials in the interior make these cars resilient to daily wear and tear.

Owning
The BMW 3 Series has class leading running costs due to low depreciation; expect to recover around 60% after 3 years, and low servicing costs. Servicing intervals vary depending on how the car is driven; maximum intervals are at 15000 miles.

Drivers
All of the Honda Civic's petrol engines use VTEC variable valve timing to squeeze out optimal performance. The result is that all the engines are very smooth and deliver strong output across the rev range. Engine noise is also minimal, apart from the Type-R, which needs to be revved hard to deliver real punch. As you would expect from its 'mini people carrier' positioning, the base Honda Civic's ride is more suited to the school run than thrashing around country lanes. The Civic soaks up bumps effectively but handling is a little compromised on corners where body roll can become obvious. Steering is light, although feedback is a little limited and visibility is excellent because of the cars height. Once you get use to the dash mounted gear-stick, the Honda Civic makes an excellent choice stress free driving. The Honda Civics' cabin is a masterpiece of ergonomics with everything in its place with controls that feel solid to touch. The only downside of the cabin is that it is a little lacklustre.

Passengers
Once again it is the Honda Civic's remarkable space that stands out, there is ample head and legroom for passengers in the front and rear. Two adults have plenty of space in the rear of the Civic and three adults can be accommodated more effectively than its competitors due to the flat floor. The Honda Civic is generally refined although engine noise is audible when engines are pushed. Surprisingly for a relatively tall car wind noise is also limited.

Practicality
The Honda Civic has a very spacious boot for its class, the flexibility of which is increased further through split folding rear seats.

Equipment
This is another area where the Honda Civic outshines its rivals, all models are equipped with ABS, electric front windows, remote central locking and on most models air conditioning and a CD player.

Safety & Security
The Honda Civic is one of a very few cars that has been designed for pedestrian as well as passenger safety. Consequently the Civic scores an outstanding fours stars on the NCAP crash tests and three stars on the pedestrian safety score. The Honda Civic comes with front and side airbags, deadlocks and an immobiliser are also fitted as standard on all cars.

Quality & Reliability Although not quite a match for VW in terms of materials, the Civic cabin is very well constructed and Honda has an excellent reputation for long term durability - the Civic looks and feels like it will continue this tradition. Honda's confidence in the quality of its cars is underlined by its 3-year/ 90,000-mile warranty.

Owning
Honda has a reputation for solid engineering and consequently the Civic has low depreciation rates. Insurance also tends to be low (apart from Type-R) and the engines are all relatively economical to run.

It's a thoroughly modern design that's innovative in its use of space, with remarkably good head and rear legroom, well specced, and fitted with frugal and characterful engines. It's at its best in town where it's both friendly and fun to drive. It's very nearly the complete package. The only criticisms are the high initial asking price (although Jazz holds its value well) and the lack of a diesel or headline model (like the Civic Type-R) to get the young driver market interested.

The Honda Jazz was Japanese car of the year in 2002 and offers class leading space and versatility. Competition comes in the form the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.

Drivers

Honda offers only one engine in the Jazz, a new chain-cam engine called i-DSI, that has two valves and two spark plugs per cylinder. It is a 1.4 unit that offers good levels of power (0-60 in 11.7 seconds, max speed 106 mph) and excellent economy figures (combined economy figure of 49.6mpg, urban cycle 41mpg). Emission levels are also very low (CO2 output of 134g/km).

The 1.4 DSI delivers solid pick up at all urban speeds and cruises quietly and effortlessly at motorway speeds with its limitations only become apparent when accelerating up-hill. Dynamically, the Honda Jazz also handles well and feels very surefooted - on the downside the ride is a little on the stiff side and over rougher roads can be jarring.

A high seating position gives a good view of the road and all controls are solid, neat and operate with a reassuring solidity.

Passengers & practicality

By moving the petrol tank from under the rear seats to under the front seats, the Jazz has the ability to fold all of the rear seats flat into the floor pan, creating a huge loading space in the rear of the vehicle. Additionally, the rear seat squabs can be lifted into a vertical position to create a discrete storage space in the middle of the car.

The Jazz is also refined car with engine and road noise kept to a minimum, although wind noise does become obvious at higher motorway speeds.

Safety & Security

All Honda Jazz models get anti-lock brakes, twin front airbags with side airbags as an optional extra (included as standard on the SE Sport).

The new Kawasaki NINJA® ZX-6RR sportbike marks a dramatic departure from the broad-spectrum appeal of the earlier Ninja sportbikes, giving the bike a much stronger track bias. The limited edition street-legal ZX-6RR boasts aggressive race-worthy features -including engine, chassis, riding position and overall performance upgrades oriented towards serious sport riding, track days or full-on racing. Designed with the expert and professional racer in mind, this new generation motorcycle is destined to dominate Supersport racing around the world.

The heart of the ZX-6RR is a liquid-cooled, DOHC, 16-valve, 599cc, four-cylinder four-stroke engine that delivers increased performance, especially in the high rpm ranges. To make the engine more competitive, new lightweight forged pistons weigh in at five grams lighter, while longer rods and a shorter stroke produce the high revs required for the track. The new plated, all-aluminum cylinders have 5mm shorter skirts for reduced weight. The water passageways have been reshaped for improved cooling performance. The new engine is lighter, more compact, revs higher and makes more power.

Intake and exhaust valves for the compact engine are 10mm shorter, resulting in less weight and improved high-rpm performance. Also improving high-rpm performance and valve control are lighter, oval-shaped intake valve springs. In addition, stepped spring seats better stabilize the valve springs.

To reduce cylinder weight, vibration and engine noise, the outer surface of the cam-chain tunnel has been redesigned. A new crankcase is also lighter and more rigid, allowing oil jets to be positioned closer to the pistons for optimal lubrication. To match the engine's overall compact design, the engine oil pan capacity has also been reduced.

The ZX-6RR is fed by a new-age fuel injection system that utilizes large-bore 38mm throttle bodies, while a 32-bit high-speed microprocessor-controlled timing is ultra-responsive to engine needs. The integrated system helps ensure smooth linear power characteristics and high engine output and with low emissions. A new centrally located ram-air duct system contributes to added performance, improves intake efficiency and saves weight by eliminating a number of parts needed for the prior Ram-air system.

The Lotus Europa S follows the core Lotus philosophy of performance
through light weight enabling this refined and very high performing GT car
to weigh just 995 kg. This low weight has been obtained through the clever
use of advanced and high tech materials including an extruded and bonded
aluminium chassis, composite body panels and a very advanced composite
energy absorbing front crash structure.
When compared to the award winning Lotus Elise, the Europa S has a
larger boot / luggage compartment and easier cabin access, resulting from
lower chassis sides and a higher roof line. Coupled with luxuries such as
full leather interior, driver and passenger airbags and carpets all as
standard, Lotus has created a �Business Class� driving experience.
However, the Europa S is not a derivative of the Elise or the Exige
and has been allocated a separate Lotus type number of Type 121 - the Elise
and Exige are both Type 111.
The new mid-engined coupe will deliver high levels of performance
from a high torque (263 Nm or 194 lbft at 4200 rpm) 2.0-litre turbo engine
producing 149 kW (200 hp or 203 PS) at 5400rpm. The Lotus Europa S achieves
around 90% of its maximum torque at only 2000 rpm to give �super car� levels
of acceleration from low engine speeds, propelling the car from 0 -96 km/h
(60 mph) in around 5.5 seconds, and 160 km/h (100 mph) in around 14 seconds.
Maximum speed is approximately 225 km/h (140 mph). Being a Lotus, the Europa

In keeping with Lotus' "Business Class" theme for the new Europa, the car is more sophisticated and understated than the more in-your-face styling of the Elise.
