The 2005-2006 R1 was often criticized for having a powerband biased too heavily toward the top-end; the bike was a rocketship when the rider kept the needle in the upper quarter of the tachometer, but in the lower RPM range, it was out-powered by rivals like the suzuki GSX-R1000 and kawasaki ZX-10R. This "600-like" powerband was great on the racetrack, but in everyday street riding, the (relative) lack of low-end grunt and mid-range pull was disappointing.

As I discussed in Part One, the R1 design team was tasked with the seemingly contradictory goals of eliminating or mitigating these shortcomings, while at the same time significantly reducing the new bike's emissions. To accomplish this, they decided to give up yamaha's traditional five-valve cylinder head design in favor of a more conventional four-valve layout, which allowed for a smaller combustion chamber and thus a higher compression ratio (now 12.7:1). The four throttle bodies feeding air to the new cylinder head are topped with an innovative system, called 'YCC-I', which varies the length of the intake runners depending on RPM and throttle position. Below 10,400rpm, the intake runners are 140mm in length, which significantly boosts low-end and mid-range power output. When the R1 spins past 10,400rpm (assuming the rider is applying at least 57.5% throttle), the upper section of the intake runners is lifted away, leaving the air to enter through the 65mm lower sections - a length optimized for high-rpm power output.

The throttle bodies also feature the same 'YCC-T' (yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) throttle by wire system that first debuted on the 2006 R6. Although the throttle is still connected to two cables which run down to the throttle bodies, these cables do not directly actuate the throttle body butterflies. Instead, the rider's wrist motion is translated by a throttle position sensor, which tells the ECU how hard he wants to accelerate. The ECU then makes the decision as to how far and how quickly to open the butterflies, maintaining maximum air velocity in the intake tract to maintain maximum acceleration (consistent with the demands of the rider, that is). Why not locate the throttle position sensor directly on the twist throttle and eliminate the cables, you ask? Well, besides actuating the throttle position sensor, the return cable actuates a small arm that manually closes the throttle body butterflies. Thus, in the unlikely event of an electronic malfunction that left the butterflies open (the throttle-by-wire equivalent of a stuck throttle), the rider can manually close the butterflies by merely closing the throttle.

yamaha Gladiator, the latest 125 cc bike from yamaha Motor India, is out in the market. yamaha unveiled the 5-speed 'fun bike' in New Delhi on Wednesday. The yamaha Gladiator will be up against the leaders in the 125 cc executive segment dominated by hero honda Super Splendor and the Bajaj DTSi.
The yamaha Gladiator DX will have electric start and 240 mm front disc brakes, while the standard yamaha Gladiator will come with drum brakes and kickstart.

The 11 PS, four stroke bike is the first in a line of three bikes which yamaha India plans to launch this year.

Said yamaha Motor India CEO and managing director Tomotaka Ishikawa: �True to yamaha�s belief of setting new benchmarks by offering products that surpass customer expectations, the Gladiator will kick start a new biking lifestyle in the Indian market. Developed as a next generation fun bike, Gladiator brings with it the added values of superb performance, new styling, greater handling and comfort� .

Its 125 cc single cylinder churns out a maximum power output of 8.0kW (11 PS) at 7,500 rpm and a max torque of 10.4 Nm (1.06 kgf-m) at 6,500 rpm, a notch above most bikes in the category. Moreover, the bike can be started in any gear and offer excellent corner handling. yamaha claimed that the Gladiator bike will be able to give a mileage of 67 kmpl in actual city conditions.

The yamaha Gladiator power unit is characterized by its 5 speed transmission, a first for any executive category bike, with optimized gear ratios. The smooth transition of gears makes it possible to bring out optimum torque throughout the torque-band. yamaha claims that the Gladiator is equally at ease in stop and start conditions of urban traffic and the open highways. yamaha has also started a new campaign to promote the yamaha Gladiator in India.

At the launch of yamaha Gladiator in India, company officials also announced said that yamaha plans to sell 4 lakh bikes in India this year and six lakhs next. yamaha will also be setting up a new plant to manufacture two wheelers in India between 2008 and 2010. yamaha also has plans to foray into the scooter segment, for which a feasibility survey is under way.

yamaha, which was one of the pathbreakers in the 100cc category back in the eighties and early nineties has been steadily losing marketshare in the last few years. Now, it commands a small 4% of the two-wheeler market, which it hopes to raise to 10%.

Whether the benefits of YCC-S are worth the extra money is a tough call. For me, I'd save the money and get the standard transmission. Early-adopters and less-involved riders will appreciate the trick new system that is bound to only get better over time. Perhaps one day we'll see a YZF-R1 with the FJR's toggle shifter but without the auto-clutch.

Yamaha says the AE was made "to expand the appeal by offering more relaxed function," and its mission is mostly accomplished. The company claims that nearly 30% of its orders during its "Priority Delivery" program were for the AE, although Yamaha has made an extra production run of the standard model to fulfill demand.

In 2005, an upsurge in FJR sales resulted in the bike achieving a solid 28% market share in the category. With the considerable upgrades to the 2006 model and the special AE version, we expect that number to rise.

The most visible change to the KX250F is the aluminum perimeter frame. As with the KX450F, Kawasaki engineers combined their experience designing steel perimeter KX frames and techniques used to construct the Ninja® ZX™-10R sport bike chassis to create an all-new aluminum perimeter frame. To make the engine more competitive, new lightweight forged pistons weigh in at five grams lighter, while longer rods and a shorter stroke produce the high revs required for the track. The new plated, all-aluminum cylinders have 5mm shorter skirts for reduced weight. The water passageways have been reshaped for improved cooling performance. The new engine is lighter, more compact, revs higher and makes more power.

Intake and exhaust valves for the compact engine are 10mm shorter, resulting in less weight and improved high-rpm performance. Also improving high-rpm performance and valve control are lighter, oval-shaped intake valve springs. In addition, stepped spring seats better stabilize the valve springs.

To reduce cylinder weight, vibration and engine noise, the outer surface of the cam-chain tunnel has been redesigned. A new crankcase is also lighter and more rigid, allowing oil jets to be positioned closer to the pistons for optimal lubrication. To match the engine's overall compact design, the engine oil pan capacity has also been reduced.

The ZX-6RR is fed by a new-age fuel injection system that utilizes large-bore 38mm throttle bodies, while a 32-bit high-speed microprocessor-controlled timing is ultra-responsive to engine needs. The integrated system helps ensure smooth linear power characteristics and high engine output and with low emissions. A new centrally located ram-air duct system contributes to added performance, improves intake efficiency and saves weight by eliminating a number of parts needed for the prior Ram-air system.
